Been using Acrobat 8.1.4 Pro on a Vista Home Premium 32 bit machine for many years. No real changes to the PC in a while, other than OS security updates and some non-Adobe apps.
Lately, when I start Acrobat, the window automatically closes after ~8 seconds. The main window may linger while pull-down menus are active or sub-windows are open, but closes before I can do much. Help/Repair Acrobat Installation didn't work. Under Help/Activation, both Activation and Deactivation are grayed out. Tried Help/Registration, but get a connection failure despite good Internet connectivity and enabling JavaScript.
In Control Panel/Programs and Features, selecting Acrobat and Repair has no effect. Tried Adobe's trial setup program (AcroPro80_efg.exe), but it terminates because I have a more recent version (8.1.4) than what it wants to install (8.0). From the Control Panel, I uninstalled and reinstalled with the CD -- no change. Thought Reader X might be involved, so I uninstalled it, then uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat again from the CD -- no change! (It accepted the serial number from the CD case, but never asked/allowed me to activate. Hmm.)
I found a few related discussion threads, including a lengthy one from 2006 (https://forums.adobe.com/thread/302997?start=0&tstart=0). Tried some things there (setting FLEXnet Licensing Service to auto, enabling Acrotray Services, etc.), but nothing panned out.
I use Acrobat to organize my personal files, and can't/don't want to justify buying or renting the latest software. What else can I try?
Thanks!
Gary
