Acrobat cannot open files in the “Adobe PDF document” format.

Sep 18, 2016 Sep 18, 2016

I'm running Acrobat Pro 10.1.16 on Mac OSX 10.9.5 (I know, I'm old fashioned.)

Since some time I cannot open any PDF files by double-clicking or from a browser (Safari, Firefox).

Using File, open in Acrobat does work.

This hasn't always been the case, it just occured at some point and is persistent.

Many forums signal the problem, so I'm not the only one, but so far I have not found any solution.

The Adobe helpdesk is a mess and totally unaccessible.

This whole issue is rediculous and anoying, ant the text "Acrobat cannot open files in the “Adobe PDF document” format." is hilarious.

Adobe, is there an answer?

Thanks, Kees

PS

This is probably not the right place for this issue, but that just illustrates how stupid this whole 'helpdesk' issue is handled by Adobe.

Hi kees1954,

Please be informed you are using Acrobat X on an un-compatible platform, please make sure you check the system requirements ( Adobe Acrobat system requirements  ) before installing the application as the application may or may not work on an un-compatible platform.

Try creating a new user account with the admin right on Mac & check if it fixes the issue.

Aadesh

Dear Adesh,

Thanks for the reply.

The whole Adobe suite has been working like a charm on this computer since many years, and since I'm not a very frequent user I'm not fond of upgrades that come with new learning curves every time. Never change a winning team. That's the exact reason that I didn't upgrade my operating system (which is free) and hence also not the Adobe suite.

Are you basically saying I should upgrade?

Kees

Hi kees1954

Please make sure that the PDF viewer plugins are enabled in the web browsers so that the web browsers are able to open the PDF document.

KB document for help: Display PDF in browser Adobe Acrobat DC, Acrobat Reader DC

Dear Adesh,

There are no Adobe add-ons or plug-ins active in Firefox or Safari. A search in Firofox did not bring up any Adobe add-ons. So I don't know what you are talking about.

Also, double-clicking a file in finder to open it in Acrobat does not work. So it probably has nothing to do with the browser.

The sunny side: after closing acrobat all functions work again; open in browser, open from finder. Downside: you have to (hard) close the program after each use.

Diagnose: It's an Adobe software item, not a browser or OS failure.

Hoping for a solution.

Kees
