Adobe Acrobat XI print to PDF overwrites random old PDF files

The Adobe Acrobat XI print to PDF doesn't print in the selected directory with the entered file name, instead it overwrites a PDF file previously printed months ago.  I've tested this, and it has overwritten network shares and local drives.  The overwritten files have not been used for sometime and didn't appear in lists of recently used files.  I can see no pattern behind the file Adobe print to PDF overwrites.  The system worked stably in August 2016 with no problems.

I've recovered the overwritten files from backup and removed the Adobe Print to PDF printer driver.   Due to the destructive nature of the issue I thought I'd ask if anyone has experienced anything like this before and can suggest a solution before attempting troubleshooting.  Anyone?

Conditions:  Windows 10 on desktop with Acrobat XI Pro, printing from Microsoft EDGE.  Printer setup-up to prompt for file name and prompt before overwriting.  The network shares held Windows Server 2012 R2,

For what it's worth there are many reports of PDF printing from Edge not working but I've never heard of this one. The cause is obscure. Have you tried IE. Instead?

No I didn't get around to testing on IE - testing that involves restores from backup is too time consuming.  Microsoft's print to PDF seems to work fine, so I just removed the Adobe print driver for safety.  I see what you mean about problems; just found the thread, Cannot print to pdf from microsoft edge in windows 10  .  No real clue as to solution in the thread but it suggest something going badly wrong on this area.  I also used to get occasional hangs when printing but didn't get to the root cause of that.
