I have seen in a previous forum that is possible with a button and javascript (https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1892058?q=upload%20image ) however this was limited to only PDF format. This thread was from 2015, has there been any updates to this feature since? Or a workaround. I am creating an invitation for a client where they can customise the data and would like to have it where they can insert/upload a logo. For many of these users changing an image format to PDF from say a JPG or PNG is beyond their capabilities. Help, need an answer.

There's no change in how this works, or a workaround. If they want to be able to insert other file formats into the file they need to have Acrobat, not the free Reader.

This should really be like very basic stuff. Uploading an image to a form would be expected to accept common internet image formats first and foremost. And not so hard to implement - much easier than parsing the PDF, in fact.
So what gives?

In the latest version of Acrobat Reader DC you can use following image formats:
JPG, GIF, PNG, and TIF
