How can I edit the purple message box?

You can't. Note that it's not there with Acrobat/Reader DC.

I don't understand, why not? Some of the samples I've see show much more wording in that box than what is showing in mine. I would think there would have to be a way to show users what is required instead of editing each field.

I'm assuming you're asking about the document message bar that appears above the page. Adobe doesn't want it to be user editable to prevent spoofing/social engineering. A lot of people did not like the feature (aka "Purple bar of death") as it was used with forms and I argued that the wording was often in conflict with the purpose of a particular form. It seems Adobe agreed and decided to remove it. If you're asking about something else, can you post a screen shot?
