I have Acrobat 8 Pro. I used to have the pages at the top of the pages but not now. I used to have the page numbers (like 6/15) at the top of a PDF document. Now they aren't there. How can I get them back?

Try to launch Acrobat>right click on the toolbar>then click Page Navigation.
Below is the screenshot:
Let us know if it worked.

I am sorry for late response.
What happens when you right click on the Toolbar, do you see Page Navigation option?
Could you please post a screenshot here?

When I right click on the toolbar, nothing happens. When I click on “View”, then click on “Navigation Panels”, then click on “Pages”, I get the document’s pages on the left hand side of the screen. Nothing to put the pages on the top of the document.

Is you copy of Acrobat/Reader showing the "Tools" bar?
You can show or hide the tools bar by pressing the F8 key.
Once you have the tool bar showing, mover the mouse pointer to the middle of the tool bar and right mouse click. You should get a drop down menu (context menu) with a number of options Click on the "Show Navigation Tools" and new menu will appear. Select the tools you want by highlighting and left mouse clicking the tool name.
You can also use the menu bar to display/hide the page navigation tools.
Select the "View" option, "Show/Hide", Tool Bar Items", "Show Page Navigation Tools", select the individual tools or "Show All".

I’m trying to get the page number and the back & forth arrows at the top of the page. Somehow these disappeared.

Acrobat 8 Pro:
Isn't it View > Toolbars to see available toolbars, the check Page Navigation?
It's been a while, so if that doesn't work, let us know.

Ok, I'm looking at my book from 2007, and trying to remember what isn't mentioned...
How about Tools > Customize Toolbars > Page Navigation > Reset Toolbar

Or... I'm thinking you can right+click the Page Nav toolbar and show them from there.

I am used to having the page numbers and < and > for going back and forth through the document. For some reason, these items are not there anymore.

I understand. But I'll need to see the menu organization to remember how to help you restore them.

We can do this, I just haven't seen 8 in a long time. Will you open View > Toolbars and take a screen shot?

That is one of the options in the pop-out window. The label is "Page Number" and it is selected but not selectable.
Acrobat 8 is not longer supported and does not work with the current available operating systems. By staying with Acrobat 8 you leave yourself open to threats that and other issues that have been blocked, fixed or upgraded with the new versions of Acrobat/Reader.
Have you tried the "Help" option for your version?
Acrobat 8 Help go to Page 26 for the section about tool bars.

I would try to "Repair" your copy of Acrobat.
Also if you are running any version of Windows released after XP (version 2000, 7, 8, or 10) you y upgrade your copy of Acrobat since it most likely will not be full functional with either of OS or the MS Office versions available to your OS.
