how to open pdf files in adobe on mac

I've installed Acrobat 11 but I can't open files in it.  How can I make it the system preference on a Mac?

Please let me know what version of MAC OS you are using.

You might check if Acrobat XI is compatible with your OS:

System requirements | Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, Acrobat Standard DC

Also, refer the below mentioned Kb doc link and see if that helps:
