How would I go about this? I'm unsure how to listen for events.

You don't listen for events, except in the context of event triggers added to an existing document.

If you're new you should probably look again at your problem, because you're working against Acrobat, not with it. Listeners are the only reasonable way of working in some other apps but alien to us here. What do you want to achieve?
