Page size rounding errors in Acrobat

Hello,

When I set the Adobe PDF Page Size in "Adobe PDF Settings" in inches, Adobe rounds the dimensions to two decimal points. For example: 8.625" becomes 8.63". If I click on the Unit radio buttons to switch from inch to point, I then see 621.36pt.

Now, 8.625" is in fact 621pt. So I start over and instead of setting the dimensions in inch, I set them in point. So I set 621pt for the size which Adobe displays as 621.0pt. Then I click on the radio button to switch from point to inch and Adobe displays 8.63". Fair enough. Then, I click on the radio buttons again to switch back from inch to point. I expect to see the original 621.0pt I had set. However, Adobe displays 621.36pt.

I don't understand what is going on! What is Acrobat's precision? Where can I edit or see the precision Acrobat is working with? In my example, is Acrobat working with 8.625" or 8.63"? Is Acrobat working with 621.0pt or 621.36pt when I set the dimension in points?

Thanks, this is for Acrobat 9.

Hi sPretzel,

Please let us know if you are trying to print to PDF or printing PDF.

Please also check the page dimension under "Adobe PDF settings" in Adobe Reader DC

Check if you get the same results there.

Regards,

Meenakshi

Things that can be going on, useful background...

* All sizes inside a PDF are written in points, whatever you specified them as.

* There is a limit on precision, varying with the release, but fractional points are supported.

* Some parts of Acrobat, and other apps, and system tools, may round to a whole number of points, or to some other unit

* Rounding can happen on input and on output

* There is no one rule for rounding, it depends where you type it and where you look

Because the coding will vary you need to be absolutely clear about

* Mac or Windows

* Which exact version of Acrobat, and which Acrobat flavour

* Where EXACTLY in the UI you specify a number

* Where EXACTLY in the UI you see a number

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. Here are the clarifications you asked for:

- I am printing to PDF.

-I checked the page dimensions in Properties and when in inch, the incriminated dimension (which is set to 8.625") is 8.63" and when in points, it is 621.0pt. The dimension in points is correct.

-Windows

-Acrobat 9

-I specify the page dimensions in Adobe PDF Settings>Adobe PDF Page Size>Add Custom Paper Size menu.

-If you toggle the units in that same window (Add Custom Paper Size menu), you will see that 8.625" becomes 8.63", and then becomes 621.36pt (instead of 621,00pt). Or, if you first set the dimension in point to 621.00pt and toggle to inches, it becomes 8.63" and if you toggle back to points, it becomes 621.36pt.

Ok, things are complicated still more here because Acrobat's printer has to pass this information to be stored by Windows, with who knows what rounding. I suggest you check what the actual page size is in Acrobat once it is created (hover over bottom right of window).
