When you say that the “PDF made in Acrobat 9 will not open when e-mailed” exactly what do you mean? What does the recipient of the PDF file see? An error message from Adobe Reader or Acrobat? Nothing happens? What?

Does the PDF file open on the systems on which the PDF file is (1) created and (2) being mailed from? There is nothing about PDF files made in older versions of Acrobat that could or would not allow them to be e-mailed. E-mailing a PDF file as an attachment is not in any way dependent upon the version of Acrobat that created it and doesn't require installation of same to send or forward such an e-mail. It doesn't sound like a newer version of Acrobat would help you at all!

More information please and maybe we can better assist you.

Try to answer as well as Possible.  I have only used Acrobat 9 to make PDF's. Never made them on any previous version. If I email to myself to see what I'm sending, I get a notice that I must upgrade my reader to 5 or above or no download will happen.  When i 'play the game' and let Adobe update, It will start, then say I have a much better reader already installed.and quit.I am using Reader 11.0.by the way, I can see that it is downloading because the download says it contains about 7 mgs if info. If I send the download to someone who has Acrobat on their machine, it will default automatically use Acrobat that to download.(Not that way, however, on my computer)  They have no problem.  My problem is that 99% of my people do Not have Acrobat, only the Reader, like billions of other people. I have uninstalled acrobat and the reader several times. I have installed Acrobat Pro DC. It makes a terrible Portfolio that is un editable and Very Amaturish in design.Looks like an 8th grade class project- I give them a C. (I'm told by the Adobe tech people that DC and the Portfolio maker are not compatible...they're right!). So I have uninstalled Acrobat DC, reinstalled Acrobat 9. It makes a great Portfolio that I cant send to anybody without Acrobat on their computer! Sent out a portfolio to a few people they get this: They say after they x out the box the program opens...They say after they x out the box the program opens...with no need to download.  I'm beginning to think this is something only on my machine. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Happy to answer any othe r questions.   Thanks again

Please give us the exact. complete words of the message you summarise as , "I get a notice that I must upgrade my reader to 5 or above or no download will happen. "

I'm going to guess it actually says something like "To view this file correctly..."

If so, you've made a file that works only in Reader. Only Safari on some systems uses Reader. Mail apps and other browsers don't. Don't use portfolios if you don't want to force people to download.

The message is misleading. Read it as this instead: "This PDF can be viewed only using Acrobat Reader ... or above. Your browser or app is no using Acrobat Reader. Download the file and open in Reader".

"For the best experience open this PDF Portfolio in Acrobat nine or Reader 9 or later" along with a Get Adobe Now box. These files will open Acrobat 9, and If i open them on my computer with either Acrobat or Reader 9. they open fine. I simply cant email them (at least not to myself without getting this message). I'm not 'forcing my clients to download....they Want the Product To Download. The whole idea of a Portfolio is to EMAIL projects to different people to work with.  Am I wrong? My only option seem to be to make about 40 different PDF Portfolios-each month- and put them on a CD. Very.Labor. Intensive. I didn't have any problems with this until the Middle of February.

In the message "For the best experience open this PDF Portfolio in Acrobat nine or Reader 9 or later" the key word is OPEN. Just OWNING it is not enough.

"If i open them on my computer with either Acrobat or Reader 9. they open fine." Yes.

" I simply cant email them (at least not to myself without getting this message)." Everybody's email is different. Some show a PDF in line, some will try to open in their window (and get this message), some will open in an external reader, some will force a save, some will reject all attachments.

"I'm not 'forcing my clients to download....they Want the Product To Download." Yes, you are, by making a portfolio that cannot open in their email app.

"The whole idea of a Portfolio is to EMAIL projects to different people to work with.  Am I wrong?"  There's nothing specific about portfolios for emailing. The point is to use them when you can't combine PDFs in the tradional way to make a normal PDF. Most (not all) non-portfolio apps will show in most PDF viewers, and some email apps.

" My only option seem to be to make about 40 different PDF Portfolios-each month- and put them on a CD." That will not automatically solve your issue, just because it works for you. The key if you MUST use portfolios is that they must be opened in Acrobat or Reader. Not another app, no matter how inconvenient. This is certainly a nuisance, and is a good reason to avoid portfolios unless or until these other apps support them (which is unlikely, to be honest). You need to make this very clear to your audience and help them if they need help. You need to be able to give instructions for all the common email apps and browsers on Mac and Windows.

"I didn't have any problems with this until the Middle of February." Maybe you changed email app. Or you upgraded Mac OS. Your users might be stuck but you weren't. Or you didn't used to use portfolios.  Bear in mind that SOME email apps might actually use Reader. Some browsers actually use Reader. But it is less and less each year.

This is what I see when i try to open a portfolio on any of my emails. I've been emailing Portfolio to Companies all over my area with absolutely NO Adobe problems Since 2013. I hardly believe in 'Luck" that everyone so far has and uses a Reader on their computer. The fact is that EVERYONE has and uses your Reader. Billions of people. The Portfolio was Marketed, by Adobe,as a way to EMAIL different people/departments the info they need. They and change, comment, edit and, guess what...EMAIL them back to me. That's what I pay Adobe for to use the Portfolio Program. This way we don't have a 1500 page PDF to wade through.... Your Idea!! ...Great Idea! I'm not a computer guy. Don't know the difference between Bios and Embedding.  Don't care.

I drive the car. I need a Mechanic to either fix my car, show me how to do it myself, or send me in the right direction to someone who can. I sound irritated..I am..I know its not your problem and you personally, didn't cause it. I apologize. Dealing with this for 3 days now, my patience is thin.  Thanking you in advance for your help with this, Dave

LATEST

" The fact is that EVERYONE has and uses your Reader. "  If this were true, life would be easy. More and more people now read PDFs and do not have Adobe's Reader at all. Or have Adobe's Reader and use software that ignores it. Today's Windows and Mac systems, iPhones and Android tablets all come with a PDF reader nothing to do with Adobe. Chrome and FireFox and Microsoft Edge won't use Adobe technology.  This is the success of PDF: Adobe no longer have much control at all. You can see portfolios as a marketing tool to encourage people to GET AND USE Reader in the face of all these rivals.

I think you aren't fully realising that Adobe have no control at all over most people's PDF experience. None.
