Porfolios un-openable

I am having trouble all of a sudden combining files into a single pdf that others can open? For 10 years I have done this successfully until I had to reinstall Adobe Pro XI after a system crash. The way files are combined has changed & am trying to figure out how to simply combine several files into one to make it easier to email.

Click the Options button in the Combine Files dialog and switch from

"Portfolio" to "Single PDF"...
