Why could Adobe Reader use usb key to sign PDF file?

I have a usb key which contains my credentials and private key, and Adobe Reader can easily sign a pdf with this usb key if I enter the pin code.

As I know, the usb key is different between different providers and its API is different as well. How could Adobe Reader sign the pdf without using the API provided by the usb key provider?
