Word auto-numbers become images in PDF - why?

Hi -

When we create a PDF from documents based on one of our Word templates, auto-numbered numerical digits in 1st-level and sometimes (depending on the document) 2nd-level section headers come into the PDF as xobject images rather than as text characters.

This happens in TOC entries as well as the headers in the text.

If I manually replace the numbers in the TOC in Word, they come into PDF ok.  If I manually replace the numbers in the section headers, they come into PDF ok but, as one would expect, subsequent sections renumber themselves.

Windows 7, Word 2013, Acrobat XI.

Anyone ever run into this?  Ideas, suggestions most appreciated.

Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem, but it is only occurring on third-level numbers. So for example, sections 1 and 1.1 are fine, but as soon as it is 1.1.1, it comes in as an image instead of live text. The font is Calibri and the font is set to no ligatures. I have tried using all PDF settings, including all available PDFx/A options and even the Microsoft Word-PDF wizard and nothing makes any difference. Out client is complaining about the numbers being blurry on pages with the third-level sections and we need a way to fix it. This is on a PC, running Windows, Word 2013.
