Acrobat Pro X stopped working

I've had Pro X for years as part of Adobe's CreativeSuite.  It's suddenly stopped working, was told to uninstall/reinstall but still doesn't work. Now I'm being told Adobe doesn't support the program and my only option is to pay for the newer version.
