Bookman Old Style is gone... what now?

New Here ,
Dec 14, 2020 Dec 14, 2020

I have seen only one response to Bookman Old Style disappearing withing Adobe materials and now also on Mac.  I am in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, Version 2020.013.20064 and operating on a 2020 iMac, with OS 11.0.1.

I followed the steps that Barb Binder suggested back then and was unable to locate the font.  I too have created an important file using that font and now am unable to locate it.

First question.  Given the fact that I am continuously paying for access to the Adobe products, on what basis do they think they can just remove font packages at will?  (Seems like robbery to me and makes them unstrustworthy).

Second, any ideas how to get that font family back?

Gratefully,

Rick

@defaultgfg6f7neewdw,

To answer your first question, Adobe never, repeat never, repeat yet again never removes any fonts that you have installed on your system, whether those fonts are bundled with your operating system (in this case MacOS 11) or Microsoft Office or any other application. Thus, if you can't find a font that you need, it is not because Adobe removed it.

Secondly, Apple does not bundle the Bookman Old Syle font family with MacOS. They never did!

At one time Microsoft Office applications under MacOS installed a number of font families including the Bookman Old Style font family on your computer. Recent versions of Microsoft Office for Mac no longer do such font installation. Rather, they do provide access to that family and many other fonts only to Microsoft Office for Mac applications while you are running them. The fonts are actually located as resources within the Office applications themselves and are not externally visible. (Actually, there are 264 distinct fonts hidden by Microsoft in this manner!) I cannot vouch for this, but it is possible that updates from older versions of Office to newer versions of Office on Mac may uninstall those fonts that were previously installed on your system; if I recall correctly, those fonts were installed on the system by Microsoft a few years back!

Thus, there is no kosher method of accessing the Bookman Old Style family (and the other fonts of those hidden 264 fonts) outside of Microsoft Office for Mac unless you separately license and install those fonts directly on your system.

Again, this is absolutely not an Adobe issue!!!!!

This post triggered my memory. Recalled that Bookman Old Style is copyrighted by Monotype, even when distributed by Microsoft and Adobe.

Monotype / Linotype has been ending its license agreements with distributors (aka, Adobe) for the past couple of years and Bookman may be one of those fonts. Searching Adobe's list of foundries and fonts, only Bookman JF by Jukebox is available, not Bookman Old Style. https://fonts.adobe.com/search?query=bookman&utf8=%E2%9C%93

You might need to purchase new versions directly from Monotype. Be sure to purchase the right license for embedding fonts into PDFs. See a recent blog on this at https://www.pubcom.com/blog/2019_12-06/font-licenses.shtml

Purchase wisely!

Hi @defaultgfg6f7neewdw:

I know you said you are using "Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, Version 2020.013.20064 and operating on a 2020 iMac, with OS 11.0.1." but are you also using InDesign? That was on the InDesign forum, and was an InDesign specific answer for someone who had Bookman Old Style installed and available to their other applications, but not in InDesign.

As I think I mentioned to you on a different thread, Adobe licenses fonts from type houses and makes them available to us with our CC subscriptions. After poking around, it turns out so does Microsoft.

According to this page on the Microsoft site: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/font-list/bookman-old-style

"This typeface is available within Office applications. For more information visit this page."

As Bev mentioned, Bookman Old Style is not available with a CC subscription, but it appears it is with an Office 365 subscription. If you don't want to purchase Bookman Old Style, you might want to pursue this on the Microsoft forum, assuming you have a 365 subscription. https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/office-365/bd-p/Office365General
