I have installed Acrobat Pro DC for Mac on my new MacBook Pro touchpad running OS 10.12 (Sierra). It seems to work fine (opens pdfs), but when I try to update, I get:
"An error occurred, Please check for updates again later. Error: 104."
I've tried this several times to the same effect.
How can I fix this?

My mistake. The page to use and bookmark is Adobe - Acrobat : For Macintosh
"Are you saying that the Creative Cloud menu bar facility is reporting erroneous up to date info?"
Probably. It's not for the software you have.
"Should I uninstall it?"
Why did you install it? Do you have any Creative Cloud software?
"Should I install the Mac version of 2015.006.30306? Is this a cumulative update that picks up all previous updates?"
Yes. Yes.
"By bookmarking the update page, are you saying that, in 2017, I still have to manually check for updates to software?"
If automatic updating is broken for you and we can't get it fixed, it sounds like a plan. Perhaps updating the software will also fix the auto updates, that has happened before.

Agreed.

update by downloading the files directly and then applying them: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
if you want to correct that error, you probably need to uninstall adobe download assistant (that was installed with an older adobe program).

I have gone to the website you gave and there is no update for my build. I have "2015 Release (perpetual) | Version 2015.006.30033." The closest posted is 006.30060. It claims to be "Classic Track," whatever that means. I tried it and the update was completed successfully. Now however there are about 12 additional updates, some "Classic Track" and some "Perpetual Track," whatever that means. Please don't tell me I have to run all these individually.
I do not have Adobe Download Assistant anywhere. I did have Adobe Download Manager, and when I launched it, it installed Adobe Creative Cloud. I cannot find anywhere in this app where you can check for updates.
I have again tried updating via the help menu in Acrobat, and I get the same 104 error message.
Any other guesses?

do you have a subscription or perpetual license?

Classic = perpetual. For DC just install the latest. You've done this so you are up to date.

I apparently have a "perpetual" license. I paid a big pile of money to an authorized seller and got a disk.
The update I installed was the earliest listed. There are 12 others that are later. It is by no means clear to me from this list that I don't have to install each one of them progressively.
I did however locate on the creative cloud pulldown menu a choice (under the gear) called "Check for App Updates." I selected that. For perhaps 3 seconds (I missed it earlier) a legend next to Acrobat reads "up to date." It quickly disappears and is replaced by an "open" button. Why is does not permanently indicate the current status remains yet another mystery.
Also a mystery is the app's continual return of the 104 error when I try to update within the app itself. I would have thought that they would get the simple things right. They don't. Heaven only knows if I will ever get notice that it needs further updating. If there is an autoupdate feature I have missed please let me know.
All that said, the app appears to be working.

I seem to have been mistaken about versions. Apologies for the bad info. Get the latest classic update 2015.006.30306 from Adobe - Acrobat : For Windows and keep it bookmarked.
And don't use the Creative Cloud app, that's for the subscription software, which is much newer and does auto update.

Sorry for all the questions, but Adobe has done a miserable job providing information about what ought to be the most common and simplest of tasks. Even Microsoft gets this right.

But that is not the correct update for the classic track (20xx.xxx.3xxxx), and a continuous update (20xx.xxx.2xxxx) won't install...

Thanks for your help and patience. Installation of the latest classic update above fixed the problems. It installed easily, and I now get an actual "checking for updates" screen that eventually reports that my software is up to date.
I do not have other Adobe Creative Cloud programs. I installed CC because Acrobat DC came with it and I had hoped something would provide update information. It looks like I can uninstall it using the uninstall program for CC.
I am still unclear whether Adobe will notify me of updates, whether it checks automatically on every launch or whether I have to do it manually. The preferences indicate my choice to automatically install updates, so I am hoping that covers it.
