Thank you very much for your response. So, you've confirmed that a PDF document is not protected from being copied that way, and when it comes to intellectual property it is wide open to be copied or distributed even if you have word protection. Do you know of any other ways to protect the PDF from being passed along?

DRM protection is the only reliable way. And even then someone could still take a screenshot of each page and create a new file from it...
