Cursor turns to a black square in the menu areas, but not in the PDF area

This has just started today.  I have restarted my computer a couple of times, but that does not help.

The cursor is fine when it is in the main PDF area, but if I open up the left panel and go there, or move the cursor up to tool bar area it turns into a black square, about a 1/2" x 1/2".
It is still responsive to clicks.  I have learned that it is the upper left hand corner that is the point of the cursor.

Anyone else ever had this?  And if so, what was the cure?

Thanks for any help.

Hi there,

The problem has disappeared as mysteriously as it had appeared.  And to be honest, I did not even notice when everything went back to normal until just now when I received the email this morning asking how things were.

Thank you ls_rbls for your help.  Very much appreciated. I wish that I could have responded more accurately about exactly what had happened.

Is this happening even if you've clicked on HELP --->> "Repair Installation"?

This procedure is different from uninstalling and re-installing the software.

Thanks for the reply.

I did try the repair, but it did not seem to make any difference.

Perhaps I should uninstall and re-install?

Or, if uninstalling and re-installing doesn't work, here are a few more ideas:

  • resetting Acrobat's Preferences to defaults without re-installing: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-default/td-p/4792...
  • Readjust lower or higher resolution of your screen monitor or video card driver
  • Test how disabling desktop themes or desktop special effects impact the behavior of Acrobat
  • Also test if increasing SWAP in the virtual memory improves performance
  • Manually emptying all temporary caches or folders of the operating system
  • See in "Edit" -->> "Preferences" -->."Page Display" -->> "Rendering" section, see if enabling or disabling  "use Page Cache" and/or "Use 2D graphics Acceleration"

I appreciate the tips. I am making do. The upper left hand corner of the
square is the "active" part of the square. I have a ton of invoices to
process, and every invoice is a PDF that I stamp with a dynamic stamp to
say when it was entered into our accounting system. So I cannot take too
much time off to make the changes. I expect I will re-install once I
complete all of my bookkeeping. Bit of a pain though. I also used to have
the dynamic stamp saved to the toolbar, but I cannot remember how I did
that.

You're welcome.

I've experienced this with my Acrobat as well, but somehow I managed to fix it. Seems like a spike of program activity takes place when a certain action is performed in Acrobat leading to a brief poor  memory performance handling.

Sometimes I've seen Adobe emplyes recommend the users to create a fresh new user account profile and run Acrobat  with that new user account to compare how Acrobat behaves between two different user accounts installed in the same computer.

This helps to rule out if the issue is actually related to other apps and programs that consistently interact with Acrobat as background processes.

I am kind of lost without a visual though, would you mind sharing a screenshot ?

My printscreen key does not seem to be working.

I would use the clipper but I have to leave the cursor in the Acrobat
window, and in the toolbar area for the black square to be present.

I will send you a screenshot as soon as I figure out how to do it.
