Docs print with gray pixelated outline

This started happening about 6 months ago and I have tried to figure it out but failed.  I have no clue what changed to make this start to happen but for whatever reason sometimes my docs print with this weird gray pixelated border around the words.  I'm thinking maybe the original file wasn't a pdf because all of my standard, original pdfs don't have any issues.

Me too ... and I have no idea what it is the problem.  Most docs are just fine.  If I scan something using my ScanSnap, the print is normal.  But if I print something that someone else has scanned, it looks fine on the screen of my laptop, but comes out with lots of big pixelated splotches mostly around type text or signatures.
