Question

Image too wide for OCR

Hi there,

I am using Version 2019.021.20058 of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.

I am trying to run OCR in engineering drawings but I am getting the error that the image is too wide. To split the drawing is not an option.

I tried using crop and OCR in combination and stumbled upon weird behaviours that seem like bugs to me.

1) when I run OCR, I cannot restore the original size before cropping, except when using "Searchable Image (Exact)".

2) when restoring to the orininal size, cropping the second half and running OCR again, the file dumps the OCR from the first half and retains only the latter. Saving the data in between did not help.

>> How do you overcome this error message, please?

Thank you for your valuable help.

Best regards,

Caio

Your issue is not the image "size", it is the image "resolution".
I guess that its resolution is about 72 dpi when it should be 288 or 300 dpi (which reduces its H/W dimensions in centimeters).

This can be easily fixed using Photoshop or another image processor.

I can only think of two options: 1) see if you can find a commercial business that has a wide format scanner. 2) if you have access to Photoshop, you might try to scan the two halves and use PSs ability to make Panoramas to assemble it into one image. (If you have access to PS but do not know how to do this, let me know and I can give you the basic instructions.)

Good luck!

Dear Gary, thank you for your proposed workarounds.

Unfortunately I don't have access neither to Photoshop nor to such a wide format scanner. We work with .TIF files (some decades old).

Then I am addressing these topics to the product manager:

Bug fix: Partial OCR is dumped from cropped image after re-running OCR on the remaining image.
