Multi-page PDF does not update pages

I am creating a 44-page PDF booklet to send to my local printer. The indiviual pages are created in Illustrator CC and saved as PDFs for insertion into the booklet. Wondering why Acrobat doesn't see that the inserted page has been changed and auto-update the multi-page PDF. Also, might be nice to be able to see the name of the inserted page. Any thoughts?

Because PDF files don't work like that. If you want to update them you need to do so yourself. They are not associated in any way of the source material used to create them.

Thanks for your reply. It just seems that if other Adobe apps can do it (Illustrator, for one, immediately notices a changed source file), that Acrobat should also be able to, especially, if the source is another PDF.

It might seem that way, but it's not. The PDF specification does not have such an option.

It might possible to do it using a script, but it will have to be both embedded into the PDF file itself AND installed on the local machine of each user. Also, the paths for the source materials will have to be known in advance, or the user will need to select them each time the file is opened, of course.
