Printing to scale

I'm using Acrobat XI pro and trying to print an image to scale. My image is a woodworking template that is to scale. The actual template is 2" x 12.75" the image is slightly larger. It is a horizontal image.

  • I drag-n-drop the image on an Acrobat window
  • I use tools > analyze > Measuring tool to measure the two reference lines and they measure 1.95" and 12.76". The minor difference is due to my not clicking the cursor exactly on the mark. At this time all is good.
  • I click the print icon, select Poster and check "Cut marks" and then click the print button
  • After the two pages print on my HP Color Laserjet Pro M478, using the cut marks I tape the two sheets together.
  • I then measure the two reference lines on the printout, 1 7/8" (short by 1/8") and 12 7/32" (short by 17/32")

Why did the image get rescaled and is it possible for me to correct this action? I will be contacting HP support. I suspect it is a printer issue.

When I ran a Cabinet shop I Printed to PDF a lot to send drawing out to other people in my company and to other cabinet shops, If I was to busy to do the build, and the resulting PDFs were close enough to scale for printing to paper for the other cabinet shop to build from ( I also had all the dimension on the drawing so it wasn't like someone hads to Scale off the drawings) and for other s in my office to have a digitalcopy of my drawings
I never actually printed from those PDF for my shop people to use.

In the CADD program I used I would Print to PDF using the standard print dialog window.

The big part is to chose the paper size in the, IIRC, the Acrobat Printers properties/settings dialog to the same size as the scale you want it to print to.

If you are then sending the PDF to someone and they plan on printing it to paper to scale off of then they have to have a printer that prints to that size paper.

Or you have to reduce printed PDF size, scale, to a Paper size that they can print to. Which if this a big drawing can make the actual drawing be Very Small.

I've actually scaled off my computer screen from a PDF by setting the PDF zoom to 100 % and using the Scale reference listed on the drawing

I've taken some images that are to scale to a print shop that prints blueprints. They have been able to create correctly scaled printouts, e.g. 1:1. For fine furniture work, Most often the print shop does not need to adjust (rescale) the image. I need correctly scaled printouts. After printing the template I will cut outside the line and glue it to 1/4" baltic birch plywood, now I cut it (the plywood) out just outside the lines and then sand it to the line. At this time I have an accurate template.

The print shop I use locally is about 30 minutes away and sometimes I'm working on a new drawing in the early/late hours of the day and getting to the print shop is not an option at that time. For now, I just wait until they open and then go.

Thanks for the suggestions.
