IIRC newer versions of Word include a system to Save as PDF.

Word allows you to save as a Microsoft PDF or an Adobe PDF or Print to PDF, and only the Adobe PDFs are good PDFs. Printing to PDF is the worst, as Bookmarks and the links in TOCs, indexes, hyperlinks won't convert. The PDFMaker is the best practice method, but it does have to be enabled.
