Regular crashes upon saving, when the file is reopened, large sections have been fully corrupted

I repeatedly have had the problem where I am working on a file, and save the file, and then immediately the program crashes. I send a report, reopen the file I was working on, and a large amount of the text is corrupted or missing, seemingly in random places, not just the sections I wasn't able to save. 

1. why is this happening?

2. is there any way to recover the missing text once this has happened?

Here's an example of what it looks like this most recent time. Sometimes however, there will be no xboxes, and instead fully empty spaces. 

I can actually hilight the boxes or empty spaces, and copy/paste the text into other programs, and it's normal. so the info is still there, I just can't see it.
