I got this error on a very important document created and written in acrobat dc. it is fully updated and was at the time the document used to open just fine. online I saw a help page (https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-error-1015-11001-update.html) that seemed like it showed some promise, however, I could not find the registry it directed me to in either hklm or hkcu. I found acrobat dc in hkcu but not hklm. in hkcu I found HKCU\Software\Adobe\(product name)\(version)\AVGeneral but could not find bValidateBytesBeforeHeader or anything that looked remotely similar. I need this document very much and as soon as possible please help

Generally speaking, if the key, in this case bValidateBytesBeforeHeader, doesn't exist, you would have to add it.
That having been said, the help page was for a problem in Acrobat 10 and 11, not in the DC versions. I assume that you are opening the PDF file in Acrobat DC, correct? If so, make sure that it was updated to the latest patch (from last Wednesday) and try again. Try opening the PDF file again and if it still doesn't open, try adding that double word registry key with the value 00000000.
