Word mail merge to PDF has ! in some spots on the PDF

Good morning

I have a user that is creating a Word mail merge and then saving the documents to PDF. When she looks at the PDF there are ! in spots of the document. They seem to coincide with the Date, signature, and form fields, not the parts that merge into the document. They remind me of formatting marks, just can't figure out how to get rid of them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
