Hi,
The reason could be the source document was created by some third party application which does not follow all the ISO standards which a document should have before converting that to PDF/A-1a.
You may create a sample document using Acrobat first and then try convert that to PDF/A-1a.
Also, for the current document, try follow below mentioned steps.
- Open the pdf document in Acrobat.
- File > Save As Other > More options > Post script.
- Then launch Distiller and then convert the Post script back to PDF.
- Now try converting PDF document again to PDF/A-1a it should unless the document doesn't contain any corrupted fonts and doesn't have any corrupted meta data or tags .
Regards,
Ajlan Huda.

1. How was the document created.
2. When you are trying to save the document PDF/A-1A. You are archiving document for long term.
3. Which means the document should have all font details to retain the layout and style for future use and other meta data information.
4. If you are using Acrobat Pro XI. You can open the document in Acrobat, click on File and click on Print, from printer drop down choose Adobe PDF as printer and print the document.
5 Save the printed document and then try to convert that printed document As PDF./A-1A
There are lots of sources which allows users to create PDF but they don't all the PDF Standards. If the document was created using Acrobat i would like to have a look of the document.

Open the Word document, create PDF directly with Acrobat NOT with Word.

Ok, I have created with Adobe PDF but I have the same error.

It looks as if you made the document by printing to Adobe PDF. Don't do it that way, you have a much better way. Use the ribbon which Acrobat adds to Word. This can be used to make a PDF/A file DIRECTLY with no conversion needed, if you choose the right settings.

Ok..
But the problem remains : our customers send us PDF of scanned documents so I can not convert them back to Word and then turn them into PDF .
How do I convert these PDF that I get in PDF \ A-1a ?
Should I print them and then scan them with a scanner that has the PDF \ A- 1A ?
Thanks

If they are scanned you should not have this identical problem. This message seems to be related to bad PDFs made from Word. If you have problems converting other types of PDF, you need to look at the problems individually.
On no account print and scan.
On no account convert to Word.

Ok.
We found that many PDF we receive from our customers, in the properties of the PDF, have Microsoft Word 2010 as application.
Can we convert them or not?
Thanks

If they are sending faulty PDFs it would be better to have them send the Word document,
