Japanese OCR not working - scanning hiragana only

I'm trying to convert a PDF in Japanese to a .docx Word file. When I try to use the OCR function, the Word file produced shows only hiragana and no kanji, and the formatting is all stretched and weird. I check the box for a Japanese original document etc so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Also, let us know if you exporting pdf file in Adobe Reader desktop application or in a web browser.
