How do I preview an agreement in draft mode via API?

Hey guys, I'm trying to do something that seems like it should be simple and obvious but I'm coming up with nothing.

Basically, I'd like my users to fill out a form, then generate a preview of what the agreement would look like based on those values... if they're happy with it then move it out of draft into IN_PROCESS... if they're not happy with it, let them edit the merge fields, preview again, and keep iterating until they're happy, then send.

The problem I'm having is it seems like:

I can only update merge fields if the status is DRAFT.

but...

I can only download a copy of the PDF if the status is *NOT* DRAFT.

any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm going crazy of here trying to figure out what I'm missing.  Thanks!

Also, maybe related... even if the agreement is in AUTHORING status, the merge fields don't come down, it's just a blank form.
