Artboards keep auto zooming / centering

When I'm trying to work across a large artboard (holding space bar and click + dragging the mouse), the screen keeps zooming in to 100% and auto centering to the middle of the page after I let go - which is incredibly frustrating.

It is so annoying indeed. You zoom out to work on stuff, and then you click on one element....ZOOMS IN. UGH
