You need to select your live text with the Type tool before you change the typeface. You can't just click an insertion point. If you don't see it, show a screenshot that includes your selected text with the Layers and Character panels (Window menu).
It sounds like your browser isn't allowing fonts. Depending on what browser type you are using, look for the Font setting. Make sure pages are allowed to select their own fonts.
