Hi,

I'd like to use Berthold City Light in a game I am making,  I understand that while it is avaialble from a number of free font sites, the license is Copyright (c) 1991, 1993 Adobe Systems Incorporated.

How can I legally use this font in my game?

Many thanks,

Font copyright expires after  about 100 years, so it is a long time until that will happen. Adobe have about 5000 fonts in their subscription service, but there are millions of fonts. They no longer have the license for many fonts they used to license. It's true that there are many free font sites, but they often sell stolen fonts. Happily in this case it's easy to find the owner - it's actually Berthold. Here is their page. https://www.bertholdtypes.com/font/city/be/  Now, they sell a license for $205, but that's just for personal use. Different uses need different licenses. For example to license for use as a web font costs $275 to $4275 according to number of page hits. Licensing or games is very specialist, and no standard font license covers it.  For game embedding licenses, perhaps called app embedding licenses, you'd need to contact the font maker - Berthold again in this case, and see if they are willing to negotiate or quote a price.

AFAIK, Fonts follow the same rules as other creative work. That means that the typeface will be in the public domain 70 years after the death of the copyright holder/creator. The font file is copyrighted, as any code is copyrighted.
