Auto Focus Broken on Adobe Scan App (iOS)

Explorer ,
Dec 27, 2022 Dec 27, 2022

For awhile now, it seems like the Scan App will not auto focus on documents when trying to capture them. I'm using an iPhone 14 Pro Max, latest iOS 16 build at time of writing, scan app up to date. Doesn't seem like there's any option to fix this, but maybe I'm not looking in the right places? Or maybe it is just a bug? Would love to know if anyone has a fix or is experiencing this.

One workaround I found but don't like having to do, is take pictures of documents through the standard iOS Camera app, then in Scan pick those same photos from the gallery to then be cropped and saved.

Hi @ndcgraph,

I tried the workflow you refer to and could see a yellow focus box when clicking on the screen to focus manually.

Would you mind disabling the auto-capture feature to the left of the capture button and then checking if you can focus manually?

Let me know how it goes.

Hi @ndcgraph @Bmedge,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for your experience with Adobe scan.

Would you mind sharing a few pieces of information for better investigation:

1. The application version of Adobe Scan you are using;

2. The OS [Android / iOS] you are using and its version;

3. A screen recording of what exactly happens when you try to capture.

Also, have you tried using the different modes to click the images and see the same issue with the focus?

Look forward to hearing from you.

-Souvik.

Experiencing the same problem. Scan version 23.01.24. IOS 16.3. Tried reinstalling Scan app and enabling macros but the autocrop is too aggressive and the text is out of focus.

Hi @miguel_q,

Sorry for your experience with Adobe Scan.

Have you checked if the Auto-Capture is enabled? It should be a capture icon with the letter 'A' on the left hand side of the capture button.

If disabled, I would suggest you enable it and also check if text recognition is enabled.

To check so, you can click on the home button-> profile icon-> preferences-> enable the option saying "Use Text Recognition"

Hope this helps.

-Souvik.

As far as I know it hasn't. I've updated whenever there's been one available, but it seems like they either forgot about this or don't know how to fix it. Guatenteed its not an iOS/iPhone issue, because any other app that can autofocus does it just fine.

Hi @ndcgraph @William30421048jea6,

Sorry for your experience.

Do you experience this issue with any specific capture mode or all the modes? Also, the latest screenshot of how the focus works on your device would be great to understand.

Also, a few more pieces of information:

1. The app version of Adobe Scan;

2. The iOS version your device is running.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi there,

App Version: 23.06.06

iOS: iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16.6

People using the app should be able to tap on the image being shown on screen, and that tap should auto focus the camera to whatever area the person taps, then it should scan clearly, however that is not happening in the Scan app, and hasn't for some time now (at least on iPhone). It just constantly produces blurry results.

Hi there,

I followed your steps and now everything seems to be working properly! I've tried turning on/off the auto-capture feature before as suggested, but it never made a difference until now. Hopefuly this fixes it for everyone else too?

Same issue with iPhone 15 Pro, so it will never be fixed! The issue is related to the Pro devices: they do have an ultrawide camera that's the only that can close focus (macro). But Adobe scan only uses the main camera and does not, like the Camera app, switch to the ultrawide lens when close focus is needed, nor the user has the option to select other camera than the main one.
so M@Adobe , you need to try to scan a small document (a visit card, for example) with a Pro device to see the bug and, hopefully, open a ticket.

Hi @Javier Gómez Laínez,

For this to work, the auto-capture option (the circle with the letter "A") to the left of the main capture button should be enabled.

If this still does not wok, manually disabling and re-enabling should work for you.

While the team is looking into this area of improvement, this is a step you should try at your end, too.

Using the auto-capture button has no effect. The image is always out of focus (blurred)

Hi @Javier Gómez Laínez @olivier325881673ftb,

To clarify, are you trying to use the Macro lens, capturing images at very close proximity?

Please respond to the question as this will allow us to focus on the core area of improvement.

None of the above work. The app just doesn't work for focusing on a business card.

We are simpy trying to scan a credit card, a driver license or any small enough document that requires bring your phone closer to the document to fill the screen and actually be able to recognize the text.

You can use, for example, the Amazon app to try to scan a bar code and the app is able to switch automatically to the ultrawide angle camera to properly focus close subjects.
