Can we have the ability to download full-sized image assets in Development Mode, not resized images?

Earlier this week I did some investigating around imported images set as exportable assets.

The following scenario provides some context:

  1. A client requires hero images to be provided at 1920x600 px dimensions. This is the precise file size we need to provide as a jpg or png. Our visual design team creates the image at that size.
  2. In Adobe XD, we create desktop artboards at 1280px width for a particular project.
  3. We import the 1920x600 px hero image, and scale it down to fit it into the 1280px width layout. It thus becomes 1280x400px in size.
  4. We set that image for export.

Here's what happens:

In Developer view in a published prototype, that image (a jpg that was originally 1920x600) is an asset sized to the scaled size - 1280x400, and not the original full size.

Here's the problem:

If Developer mode is intented to provide full hand-off of design assets, styles, etc. to meet a client's needs, it's problematic if the images don't meet their specifications in terms of size.

  • The client doesn't want a 1280x400 hero image.
  • We want the XD prototype to be the source of truth for all details, assets, etc.
  • We then have to supply a separate folder containing original images, which means the developers using the XD prototype now have to bounce between two places to obtain assets.

I'm assuming that this capability is not currently available in XD, but it feels like something that should become a feature. Wondering if anyone else has workarounds for this, or if this capability has been requested before.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Hi @Michael Gallegly,

I was checking on your request and wanted to inform you that if you are downloading images from the web in Development mode, it’ll download three different sizes of images, original, 2x, and 3x as a .zip file. Could you please unzip and use it as per your requirement? Please see the attached screenshot.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks,

Hi @Michael Gallegly,

Thank you for reaching out. I am not sure of the functionality available in XD. I am checking with the team. Meanwhile, we would request you to please submit your feedback on our XD UserVoice page so that our team can look into the request directly.

I am also keeping the discussion for our experts in case they have workarounds to share with you.

Thanks,

Harshika

Thanks for your reply. This doesn't really solve the issue and I'm unsure how you're exporting / downloading images at three sizes, including the original. Please see attached screenshots. Here's an explanation:

  1. Attachment 1: In my XD file, I have an original image that has been sized down, and masked.
  2. When I open the downloaded file for the masked image, I only get 1x and 2x options. There is no original.
  3.  In the masked image, I made the combo of mask + image exportable. If I remove that, and only make the image, and not the mask exportable, then the full non-masked image will download. As part of our workflow, I can get behind ensuring we make a conscious choice as to whether the masked image is set for export (for situations where only the masked dimensions are needed), or the full image without the mask (for situations where a flexible layout will impact the dimensions of the container the image is in).

Ultimately, the larger problem is this: when a developer downloads the image with reduced dimensions, the original does not download. Additionally, it would be nice if a masked image downloaded both the original full size image and the masked dimension. I would love to know you are downloading the original image as shown in your screenshot above.Adobe1.jpgAdobe2.jpg

Thanks - Michael
