multiple documents publish to the same URL

Explorer ,
Jan 02, 2019 Jan 02, 2019

I duplicated a document and modified it heavily (might be relevant?). Now, when I share either document for review ("New Link" or "Update Link"), XD serves up the same link. Whichever prototype was shared most recently is the one the link displays. Significant bug? How do I get separate links for different protos?

Hi davidicus_RYOT -

Sorry for any confusion this has caused.

Are you able to consistently reproduce the results you described where selecting New Link does not actually generate a new URL?

I tried to recreate the scenario you described, but received different results. I've included the steps I used below. If you have time, it would be really helpful if you could review and let me know if there is something I'm missing.

I tried the following steps:

  1. Create a new XD document (I'm using XD 14.0.42.14 on

Hi davidicus_RYOT,

When you make a copy (File 2) of an original XD file (File 1) that has a published link (Link 1), the File 2 will show 'update' and 'new link' buttons and you can update Link 1 of the File 1 from File 2. You can continue updating Link 1 from File 1 as well.

If you want to make a different link (Link 2) from File 2, please choose 'new link.'

Now, when you update from File 2, it will update Link 2.

Link 1 can still be updated by File 1 as long as you don't create a new link from File 1.

About the issue that your buttons are disabled, I noticed that you selected 'Require Password' option.

When you selected 'Require Password' but didn't enter a password, the buttons are disabled.

Can you try entering password or un-select the option, and see if the buttons are activated?

Please let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks,

Kate

haha I read all that six times, but I think I got it. it didn't work at first, but you opened an important door. check this out:

- file 1: I Updated the link (supposedly now Link 1)

- file 2: I New Linked (supposedly now creating Link 2)

- - file 2: New Link leads to the panel with no link icon, so I dismiss, Share again, and get the link from that panel's link icon

- both URLs are identical

(the password field has always had a password; it wasn't blank.)

- next, I unchecked Require Password and New Linked (got a new URL)

- then, I checked Require Password, entered a password, and Updated (URL unchanged)

- both URLs are unique

I think the key is to New Link without a password, right?

i'm stoked to finally have two links, but it's all been massively unintuitive

Hi davidicus_RYOT -

Sorry for any confusion this has caused.

Are you able to consistently reproduce the results you described where selecting New Link does not actually generate a new URL?

I tried to recreate the scenario you described, but received different results. I've included the steps I used below. If you have time, it would be really helpful if you could review and let me know if there is something I'm missing.

I tried the following steps:

  1. Create a new XD document (I'm using XD 14.0.42.14 on macOS 10.14.2)
  2. Select Share -> Share for Review
  3. Select the checkbox to require a password, enter a valid password, click "Create Public Link".
  4. XD generates a new URL - "URL1".
  5. Save the XD file as "MyFile1"
  6. Use File -> Save As to create a second version of the file, "MyFile2"

At this point, both MyFile1 and MyFile2 are able to update the prototype created in Step 3.

In MyFile1, if I then click "New Link":

  1. The password field is cleared
  2. The Require Password box remains checked
  3. The Create Public Link button is disabled

After entering a valid password, the Create Public Link button becomes enabled.

If I then click Create New Link, a new, unique link is generated - "URL2" - and it does not match URL1.

After creating a new link, I see the success state in the sharing popup, with the embed, copy and open link icons in the top right corner.

success-state.png

I haven't been able to reproduce what you described: "New Link leads to the panel with no link icon", or New Link not generating a unique URL.

If any of this behavior still reproduces for you, can you share the exact steps you are using, a screen shot of the panel you are seeing without icons, and the URLs you are working with (via email).  The URLs will allow us to examine the logs and identify the source of every change.

Thanks for your help!
