[Design]-How to Add an element to a component in XD

Is there a way to add an element to a component?

Am making a Navigation component, in hover state it changes color. Now I'm realizing that in the down state it would be nice to add a line underneath. I can't seem to drag the line into the component in layers view, unlocking the component doesn't help. I'm hesitant to ungroup the component and regroup becuase it is already nested within the header with customisation for different words.

Any suggestions?

Be sure you're editing the master component. In the component's state you want to add a new element, you can double click the component to access it's layers. I usually cut/paste the element inside the component.
