I'm not collaborating with any others and have no need to put files to a cloud server. Having no option for local files, being forced to up docs to a cloud server, is very off putting.

I want an option to use local files.

Hi, as of XD 29, you can now save to local documents directly without hitting the same selector by using the key command Shift+Opt+Cmd+S (Mac) or Shift+Alt+Ctrl+S (Win).
