I am using the free release of Adobe XD as a teaching resource for some school kids in the 7 to 11 age group.

The course is about making a wire frame app and for demonstration purposes it is great.

I am running the course as an outreach project in support of some local schools based at a computer gaming lounge.

We have 6 PC's all with the free Adobe XD installed.

The idea is that our students get the basics of building an app watching me use my laptop using XD then go off an have a go themselves.

In an ideal world they would each have the basic XD cloud account so they can log on at the venue or either at home or back at their respective schools and in due course probably progress onto either a paid copy of XD or maybe even an educational licence of the full Creative Cloud.

The PC's that we have have two main accounts the primary being the Admin account which is used for installing software.

Plus we have the second cut down account used for actual gaming so that the machines are safe from stray installations.

So each PC has an install but I cannot find a way to change the attached cloud account.  I do not know if this is even possible and while we may be able to get some sort of funding as a teaching resource we still need to find a way to allow the students to have their own all be it cut down version with the files in the cloud so they can work with all three venues.

From what I understand, your administrator has used a single Adobe ID for installing Adobe XD on all computers. In that case, all installations will be tied to one cloud storage account. Can you check with your administrator and get back to us?

Also, I am not an expert on Enterprise licenses. I will check with my colleagues to see if there are other possibilities that I am not aware of.

Thanks,

Preran

I do not need to check with the administrator because, I am the Administrator.

Each PC uses a local admin account not a network shared one (it is not a domain account) so we could give each PC a different account, when it comes to installing Adobe XD it just so happens that three of them were setup using my Adobe account and two were using an Adobe account created by one of the other managers only because there were two us working at the time.

To add to the complexity we are not using an Enterprise licence we are introducing s a set of school kids to the world of wire frame and app design and considered the free release of Adobe XD as a perfect solution.

There is no real capital budget here the aim is to point formative minds to the possibilities of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics).

I did go to the Adobe chat support and was repeatedly told that the trial of Creative Cloud was a 7 day licence, and without an active paid account I could not be supported.  Obviously following a help desk script (I have in the past manned a Help Desk) where if there was no active account the standard reply is the 7 day licence does not get support.

I just spent three weeks (real time probably 36 hours) understanding Adobe XD and I have come to the conclusion it is a fantastic tool for building a wire frame app and If I could afford it I would be one of those deep into Creative Cloud.  However this would not solve the multiple location scenario.  I am able to access in multiple location as it is installed on my laptop.

I am also part of that generation that got a good chunk of their knowledge base burned when the plug was pulled on Flash My first encounter being a student copy of Dreamweaver and Flash when they were both part of a student release of Macromedia Studio 8, in reality I actually come from an earlier generation having started my computing in 1983 yes there are still some of us left.

I have been co-opted into school support end of this project because I am seen as a key element of our knowledge base.

Note we are not trying to write commercial products we are only trying to introduce some children to the possibilities of STEM and give them some hands on experience with the tools that are going to be worth knowing about.

I do understand this may be some way of stopping some commercial enterprise using multiple accounts to get around not buying a licence.

Key to this is also an inbuilt lesson that the students would also become familiar with the concept of keeping their own project in the cloud and then accessing that project from multiple locations.

As it stands it would appear that we probably need a personal PC for each child in every location, when what we are trying to do is more like a hot desk environment

There is also a desire that the cloud version could be accessed by parents to demonstrate how we are progressing the learning outcomes.

If the students were older we would probably look towards a student licence for Creative Cloud but we are talking really young kids here but I am following that old Jesuit quote "Give me the child for the first seven years and I will give you the man." but in this case the children are not exclusively male.  The older ones may be ready for such a licence once they hit the next tier of education but not yet.

Hi there!

So there's a bit of legal stuff--which I can't actually give you any advice about--and a bit of technical stuff, which I can give you advice about.

  • When XD launches, it checks with the Creative Cloud desktop application to see who is logged in.
  • If you have different accounts for each child, you only have to log out of the Creative Cloud Desktop application, and then log in with the new account for the new student
  • XD can be used with the Starter Plan if it is a free account and is not associated with your educational institution

The legal issue is that I believe that Creative Cloud accounts can only be signed up for by people 13 and over. I'll need to check with someone to see what options there are in your case.

OK the jist of it is we need to go in through the Creative Cloud desktop which I suppose is fair.  I will have a chance to try this tomorrow.

I can also understand there being some restriction about Creative Cloud accounts and minors it would be nice to find some solution as this is a really good piece of software for teaching this wire frame concept.

I can see the reason why some games would have a violence or sexual content restriction or software that could incur charges for additional elements running up bills on attached credit cards.

I feel this is just nonsensical but who am I to question the motives.

When you consider Scratch (the basic programming language) also has an online option where the users stuff is stored in the cloud.  Scratch is the ultimate in an application aimed at children.

Please understand I am not trying to be over critical I am just trying to see and understand the reasoning.

If push comes to shove we will work on the accounts to be owned by individual teachers and used under supervision.

[edit]

OK. It is the next morning and I have done some testing and yes that works logging in with a different Adobe account via the Creative Cloud desktop.

I also obviously had to create a new Adobe account for testing during this process I was asked for a date of birth, but curiously nowhere was I informed that there was any sort of age limit on the account, however that may have been different if I had chosen to add a date of birth that would have made my age less than any predetermined arbitrary value.

When we look at this we can use the local PC for the student work and then use an adults account to demonstrate with an external view on a tablet or a phone. The aim is to provide the students with an understanding of wire frame in the design process.  The only reason for the cloud based tablet and phone testing is to allow the parents to see the results.

I would be interested to learn what the official Adobe attitude to this situation given that getting young users using the software has to be a good idea for Adobe.  A work around may be a local LAN server that would allow testing without using cloud based copies.  That would require the parents coming to some location to see the results but that could at least be a work around.

I have been working on a game that uses such a local solution for a game that would normally require an internet based server.  The server provides the back end for an avatar based game where the locales are built using Blender.  In this case the server is an Ubuntu Linux Server and allows for multiple PC's on the network to access the same shared environment without actually needing a link to the wider internet.

Note: a link is required during the building phase of the server but once up and running the internet is no longer required.

Oddly I am able to make this available over the internet by using Noip.com to add an online presence.

[edit2]

On an aside I was asked in a NO-Reply email  from Preran if If I had a case number for my interaction with the chat help, unfortunately we never actually got to that stage since the agent was unable to provide support I don't believe we ever got to a position where a case number would have been allocated of if it was I was not informed,  I would have written it down if it had been provided.

The response was "I can not find an active account therefore I can not proceed" note this is not a direct quote the response was polite and factual if frustrating.  At this point I came to this forum seeking clarity. Which to be fair a result I appear to have achieved.

Thanks for pinging - I didn't see the edits.

Legal Terms of Use | Adobe refers to the legal age of 13. Here's more information: I cannot use Adobe Cloud due to the age limit?  It has to do with the Children's Online Privacy Protection act, so it's a legal restriction across all social sites.

I've reached out to someone else inside Adobe to see if she can comment on what options you have, but she's out on vacation at the moment. I'll let you know if there's anything additional she can add to this.

Apologize for your frustration with the support you received. I will do my best to help.

Because a case number wasn't generated, I will need your Adobe ID to track down the interaction. Or I could create a new case for you if you send me your Adobe ID, location, and phone number over a private message. A tech support agent will get in touch with you after that is done.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks,

Preran

The European Union does not have an independent law that addresses the protection of children's data similar to the United States' Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998. ... In contrast to the GDPR, COPPA is narrower in its focus, prohibiting unfair or deceptive practices related to children's data online.

Lets start having fun I am in the UK and at present we are in the European Union but with the fiasco that is Brexit pending there is no telling where we are going to end up.

Now does the American Law prevent UK students from accessing Adobe Cloud services what is really strange is that the cloud in this case is used for the demonstration of a design model it is not like its some new social media.

As for the case number thing I did get an e-mail with the following

  • Case Number: ADB-7458855-Q1L7
  • Issue:  Account Related Issue

When I looked at this it was to all intents and purposes a blank report there was no transcription details I could access.  I an not sure if this was generated from my attempts to find on line answers prior to my original post here.  Also this notification e-mail arrived after my post about not having a case number (go figure).

As this was blank I did send a close message and replied to the e-mail informing me of the Case Number just to terminate the open case.

Don't panic on that count as I say I have effectively closed the ticket.
