Repeat grid responsive contraints in a component

I think I don't quite understand the responsive behavior of Repeat Grids inside components. If the grid is inside a group, it works fine, even on Auto without fine tuning - as I scale the group, the repeat grid responsively scales as well, adding or removing elements.

After converting the group to a Component, the Responsive Resize settings for the Repeat Grid look like this:

For some unknown to me reason the Scale mode is locked to Manual, and both the Width and the Height are locked to fixed. Obviously this results in the Grid no longer scaling at all when changing the size of the Component.

Is this somehow intentional? Should I approach Repeat Grid use within Components differently? Thanks
