Hi everyone,

We’re working to expand After Effects’ HDR capabilities. Starting with AE 25.2 build 81, HDR Preview and Transmit is available.

This support for Extended Dynamic Range on Mac and DirectX HDR on capable Windows machines will enable you to preview HDR compositions in full dynamic range in Adobe Color Managed projects on an HDR-capable display or through Mercury Transmit.

Usage

Make sure your OS/Display HDR settings are turned on (if needed), then go to Color Settings. Set your project to Adobe Color Managed, Bit Depth to 32 bits per channel and choose a Working Color Space that supports HDR, like Rec.2100 PQ. Your composition will automatically be displayed in HDR.

You can also send frames in the project’s working color space to external devices via Mercury Transmit. You will need to select the proper profile in the device settings. We are working with our third-party partners to update their drivers to more fully support AE workflows.

Please give this new functionality a try and let us know how it’s working for you, and how it’s performing on your hardware.

Have a bright day everyone!

That's great, will do some tests soon.

Hope OCIO support will follow soon. AE's ICC based ACM is also really dated at this point. Hope it is fully swapped with Premiere's new color management in the very near future and kept in sync with it's updates.

Thank you Adobe!
When using OCIO and ACES' ODTs in a MacBook Pro, please focus specifically on the following two display situations and that:

  1. AE's Display Color Space "Rec.1886 Rec.709 - Display/ACES 1.0 - SDR Video" displays perfectly when the MacBook's reference display is (manually) set to display preset "HDTV Video (BT.709-BT.1886)";
  2. AE's Display Color Space "ST2084-P3-D65 - Display/ACES 1.1 - HDR Video (1000 nits & P3 lim)" displays perfectly (and as bright as possible towards 1000 nits) when the MacBook's reference display is (manually) set to display preset "HDR Video (P3-ST 2084)".
    Note: The following document regarding "ACES Output Transform Details" was never officially published, but it should help: https://community.acescentral.com/uploads/default/original/1X/ee0e33645ccb873afd164deec2e5d37be2dd8c...
    Question: Preliminary when, and in which upcoming beta-version, may we test the two display situations above?
    In advance, thanks for all help.
    Kindly, Lars

Broadcasters will benefit from explicit mappings that follow internal CICP flags (not OCIO).  Only some of this is functional after my testing. Upmapping should ultimately work like Premiere (and OCIO does not).  Also, be aware that the LUT Plug-in does not have matrix assignments for in/out so small hue shifts may occur until fixed.
