[AE 25.2.2] Opened windows do not remember their position.

Community Beginner ,
Apr 15, 2025 Apr 15, 2025

After opening windows, they always position themselves in the middle of the application on the main monitor (I work on two monitors).
The attached video shows exactly what is going on. It does not only concern the color palette. It is a general problem.

Hi @koralfx2,

I have answered in the previous thread, but I'm copying my answer here for context.

The Modal dialogs are now only opening in the middle of the main AE UI by design. This is because the position memorization was introducing issues to other customers, resulting for some of them in a force quit of After Effects.

@Field Kuang filed a ticket internally with your feedback in your original ticket.

The only workaround right now is to revert back to After effects 24.6 to keep the previous func

We've changed how dialogs launch and they now open in the center of the main app by design. The location memorization led to issues such as dialogs moving off-screen or being obstructed by Transmit. But I understand that the new behavior would also cause the issue you demonstrated.

Besides the inconvience this new behavior might have brought you, do you find any potential benefits of it at all? I could file a ticket and collect your feedbacks for further improvements.

Let me give you another example. I work with two 27-inch monitors. On the right monitor, I keep only the timeline. I used to always open the keyframe velocity window there. Now, every time, that window opens on the left monitor. This forces me to move the mouse like crazy. It’s unbearable.

The issue affects all windows, as you’ve confirmed. I’ve reverted to version 24 because I’m wearing out my mouse and desk five times faster, and my hand and head hurt from all the excessive movement. Please restore the previous behavior—it worked perfectly.

New version (25.3) and unfortunately you did nothing about it. I ask - why are you making our work harder?

Since version 25.3, window positions are not remembered (color, keyframe velocity, but that's literally all of them). Does this really not bother anyone? @Field Kuang , did you report this to the developers?

Hi Koral,

It sounds like your workspace is re-arranged when you open After Effects. Does that sound correct? Have you tried saving your workspace layout by using the toolbar at the top to go to Window>Workspace>Save changes to this workspace?

Let us know if this helps. Feel free to share some screenshots if I'm misunderstanding the problem.

Caroline

Hi @koralfx2 ,

As @Field Kuang mentionned, this is the expected behavior since the location memorization led to a number of issues other customers were having, in some case leading to force quitting After Effects.

I understand that in your workflow this isn't ideal, and as Field mentionned, a ticket was internally filled for this. You need to understand that filling a ticket doesn't mean we are going to work immediately on it. Your feedback, along with any feedback we are getting is then sorted and prioritized. While we are not at liberty to discuss what we are working on or not, please be thoughful when a new update is released and it doesn't have a fix for a problem you have reported.

The only way to get the older behavior right now is to stay on AE 24.6

This behavior has been reverted, and starting with 25.4, dialogs will once again open at their last position. If you're signed up for the AE Beta, you’ll likely see this change reflected in one of the next couple beta updates.

The dialog position memory will be reintroduced in a future release of AE. We need a little more time for testing so it won't make it to 25.4.

Thanks to Field, Sébastien, and the rest of the After Effects team for bringing back the default behavior for modal dialogs. That change makes it possible for me to move to the current version of AE without breaking my workflow.

I hope there’ll be a way in the future to support users who prefer the new behavior — maybe a setting in Preferences to turn off position memorization? I understand the reasoning (that it caused issues for some users, even crashes), but an optional toggle could offer the best of both worlds.

Thanks again.
