Can no longer import adobe animate FLA files into after effects

Community Beginner ,
Mar 27, 2025 Mar 27, 2025

Every time I try to import a file from adobe animate in to After effects 2024-2025 it remains stuck at 0 then displays the error message "an error occurred while importing this file . Please try again". I have tried every troubleshooting method possible and spoken to Adobe customer service, no luck. Please help.

Looks like we have a fix ready. Here are the steps:

1. Close any open instances of AE and Animate

2. From Creative Cloud Desktop app, uninstall Animate.

3. Restart your machine

4. Open Creative Cloud Desktop app

5. Go to "Apps" in the left sidebar

6. From the right sidebar, click the ... next to Installed Apps and choose Check for updates.

7. Once the update check has been completed, go back to Apps and find Animate.

8. Install Animate.

That should cause Animate to install and the configu

I've got a better idea now what is failing (AE can't find the background Animate Process to import) but I need to talk to the Animate team (who are based in India) so it'll be Monday before that happens. I can't see a work around for a temporary fix right now either, but as soon as I have more details, I will share them out here.

Oops, make sure to update your graphics driver!

I have an NVIDIA one, and I updated it as "Studio" instead of "Game Ready"

Thanks for the fast response, Warren! The SWF workaround is going to work for this project, so that's a huge help. However, the normal FLA import still isn't working for me. I'll post my system info in the thread you linked and see if we can figure it out there. Thanks again for your help!

I have the same issue.
I'm using a ROG Zephyrus G15 laptop running Windows 11 Home (version 26100). I updated After Effects to 24.6.6 and 25.2.2, but still no luck. I also updated Animate to 23.0.12 and 24.0.9, but that didn’t solve it either.

I cannot for the life of me import any FLA files into After Effects 2025. I've read similar issues happening as recently as a couple weeks ago in thie community. I have downgraded Animate and After Effects to 24.0.7 and 25.2 respectively, updated both to latest versions, mixed versions both ways, and reinstalled the product to zero solutions.

Expected Behavior: Upon importing an FLA file, I would receive options before finishing the import process.

Reality: Upon importing an FLA file, After Effects freezes and the import gets stuck at 0% before abandoning the process with "An error occured while importing this file. Please try again."

Should also note that I troubleshooted to make sure it wasn't an issue of file size, and this problem still occurs with a fresh FLA with absolutely nothing it it. I require this feature specifically for time-sensitive related projects. I understand that Animate is slowly getting deprecated, but I think it's fairly ridiculous to pay for a program in which one of its main features doesn't work properly.

Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 19045)
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8-Core Processor (16 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070
RAM: 64GB

Hopefully someone can help out, I'm practically losing hair here trying to fix it.

It's extremely depressing that they just refuse to even acknowledge it.
This bug is hindering numerous users, and we can't even get an
acknowledgment of its existence from an official Adobe staff member. 37
million paid subscribers x $20 monthly subscription fee = 740 million
dollars in estimated revenue. Is it that complex to assign a
single developer to at least put their glasses on and squint at the code
for a brief second? I'm not asking for an immediate fix, I know programming
is tedious, but Adobe can you please make an official statement on this?
I'll even accept a "We'll get to it when we get to it" .

To get this resolved, we really need to provide information about our hardware, software, and OS on systems that the FLA importer is not working as expected.

It's not affecting every user.  I have two Macs that it works as expected on and two more Macs and a Windows laptop that I need to use the old method of exporting SWFs on the Animate side.  As best as I can tell, I am running the same versions of everything on all five systems.

I have an unfortunate follow-up.

It's been working as expected on my newest MacBook Pro this whole time and started working after updating the apps on my main work Mac; however, it's not working on three other computers that I maintain (two Macs and a Windows laptop).

Hi all,

I apologize for the delayed response.

I am filing a bug for further investigation on this issue. As @Warren Heaton suggested, please share your hardware details and version of After Effects and Animate so that we can replicate the issue in-house.

Moving the thread from Discussions to Bugs.

Thanks,
Nishu

Can anyone with this issue supply us with files that fail to import? We've tried reproducing the issue internally but have not been able to. Maybe it is something in the files, maybe it is something specific to what else is installed on your computer. But it'd help us if you can supply us with files that fail for you.

Since late feb. / early march after effects would hang on attempting to import .fla files. At first the import progress bar would hang and not show any progress for about 20-30 seconds, and then after effects would crash. Eventually I found a workaround by starting after effects in safe mode, then the flash file would import. But as of about a month ago, even that stopped working. Now it hangs for about 30 seconds and gives me an error, doesnt crash. And now safe mode doesnt even work.

I tried rolling after effects back to earlier versions, newer versions.. nothing works. Same with animate, I have tried with several versions. Still does not work.

I have tried different versions of GPU drivers, switching from "game ready" drivers to "studio" drivers. No change.

Windows 11 pro 64 bit

AMD Ryzen 9 7950x 16 core

64 gb RAM

NVIDIA Geforce 4070 TI Super

if there is anything else I can provide that would help, please let me know.

Thanks. And it appears your file does reproduce the issue on my setup internally here, which is very, very helpful. It looks like the background Animate process is failing during import, so I should be able to debug that and see what's going on.

Animate and After Effects both open just fine. The issue is with importing
Animate .fla files directly into After Effects. When the user attempts to
import a .fla into after effects they receive the error that I have
attached below.
