premiere deletes project file

I have been noticing premiere projects and after effects projects vanishing .  I recently was able to reproduce this because fortunately, we have a backup system in place and was able to recover the deleted project, and reproduce it.

I have a dynamically linked after effects project with som fottage that became unlinked.

I choose "edit original" from premiere and relinkd the footage that was unlinked.

When I went into premiere it said the after effects project (that was just there) was offline.

When I looked in the folder that the ae project was in, it was empty

Hello Mike,

Very strange!

The "Your computer is being controlled by..." banner prevents us from seeing the path to the .aep being opened, when you invoke Edit Original; that'd be interesting to know.

By any chance was the original .aep (that still exists at 00:09 of your video) saved out of a previous version of AE, which could have necessitated an upgrade-upon-open, in AE?

Is the 'ae' directory on a local disk? If not, what sort of storage, and how is that storage mounted on the local system?

The ae project is in a subfolder of the folder the premiere project is in.

Both on local disk. The ae project was same version as premiere...both v2023

@mikec92163573 It also appears that the .AEP disappearing at the Finder level occurred when you saved the After Effects .AEP.  Prior ot that, the dynamic link connection between Premiere Pro and After Effects appears intact, as Premiere Pro was displaying the .AEP comp contents, and was able to open the .AEP via Edit Original correctly.

Are you able to reproduce this while maintaining visibility on the Finder to confirm at what point the .AEP does in fact disappear?  That will help us more accurately target this issue.

On a side note, I notice that your Premiere Pro project file name appears to be that of an autosave.  Are you deliberately working from, and within, an autosave project?

That helps, thanks!

I propose that this bug report should move to the AE forums, and be retitled "After Effects deletes project file".

@Kevin-Monahan , can you do [above]?

I think it might be a bigger issue.  Although the event that I was actually able to reproduce was in after effects; I have been noticing premiere projects vanishing as well.

This thread is titled as an AE problem; your video confirms a repro case, of an AE problem.

If you can reliably reproduce both behaviors, we should track them both, separately.

I think it is a bigger problem and you should be taking very seriously, not passing the buck to another department.

Also, of note, this only happens when choosing edit original from premiere.  If I just open the ae project in after effects, relink, and save.  The project does NOT get deleted.

It is because we take it seriously, that we're involving an additional
product team.

@mikec92163573

Please do not use slashes in any folder or file names.  This practice can confuse filesystems and will cause problems... it is against convention even though modern filesystems may allow it.

If your problem continues after this is revised, let us know.

This is incorrect.  I assure you, I would never put a slash in a file or directory name.  Here is a screen shot of the path. Maybe that is part of the bug, as it was displayed from your product..

If you look at the video I sent where the file was not deleted, you do not see the extra slash. Only when it is opened from premiere using edit original do you see the extra slash.

After Effect 23.6.5 (Build 4)

Not sure why this is being moved to After Effects.  As I said before, the issue happens if I open the project through premiere by right-clicking on the dynamic link in the timeline and choosing edit original.  If I open the project from within after effects and do all the same things, when I save it, it does not get deleted.

And that double slash that Ben mentioned appears when I I open from premiere. When I open in ae, the double slash does not appear.

Premiere Pro Engineering recommended the move to the AE Bug Reports forum. Either place is OK to troubleshoot an issue like this. I hope that is OK.

Hi @mikec92163573,

Thanks for sharing the screen recording and all the details. We can see the issue and will file a bug if needed. Before that, it'll be helpful for us to know if it happens in the latest version as well. Can you test that if that's not too much trouble?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Nishu

OK - I've been able to reproduce this once, and specifically using your folder structure, and specifically in your exact Premiere Pro and After Effects versions.

~/Desktop/SMT_planet fitness Teddy_050624
└── projects
    ├── ae
    │ └── web_4k.aep
    └── premiere
        └── edit_01.prproj

I'm going to keep looking into this and see if I can reproduce it again.  In the meantime...

  • Does this happen when you are working somewhere other than your Desktop?
  • How are you getting the comps from After Effects into Premiere Pro?  Are you creating them in After Effects and then importing them/dragging them into Premiere Pro?  Or are you creating them directly from Premiere Pro using Replace With After Effects Composition?
  • Did you ever relink your Dynamic Link comp in Premiere Pro during your workflow?
  • Did you ever move you source .aep After Effects file after it was created, into a different folder from where it started?

You're right.  Something is... weird.
