2 second lag before playback

Hi, crippling usability bug here. 

When I playback/preview something in After Effects there's a big lag between the space bar being pressed and playback beginning, even with a fully cached scene/comp. This is a very recent development. couple of days at most.

Any help greatly appreciated

(I'm using a pretty powerful workstation specced and built for AE about 19 months ago. All software up to date)

In the past couple of days:

Did you upgrade your version of AE?

Did you upgrade your GPU drivers? 

Did you change your audio hardware selection?

When we see these delays, it's generally caused by something in the hardware hung or being setup before playback can begin. That's where I'd start investigating.
