After Effect 2021 crashes

Community Expert ,
Mar 27, 2021 Mar 27, 2021

I notice this is a common thread, but I have a few other additions...

AE v18.0.0 and the 18.0.1 update crash as soon as it opens.

I get no chance to do anything and there are no logs generated.

I rebuilt my prefs; I uninstalled and ran CC Cleaner; I updated my NVIDIA drivers--all to no avail.

Crashes with or without opening an existing project.

The odd thing is AE v17.7 runs fine. (Thank goodness!)

Windows 10 19042.906 (but AE 18.X was crashing before the latest few MS updates)

64 GB RAM; i7-6700K 4.00GHz processor

235+GB free on M.2 SSD C drive

Any suggestions?

After the last two minor updates on 2021.04.13 and 2021.04.14, the problems seems to be resolved. (The first one did not fix the problem, but the latter one did.)

My system has not changed since my post, so I assume it as a "bug fix" in the last update.

Hi Creamer Training,

Sorry for your issue and thanks for the detailed post.

Sounds like it could be related to the GPU. Which GPU do you have? Would you mind disabling it in the Device Manager and see if it brings any change? If it doesn't, please check if it's working in a new user account. It'll help us to understand if it's related to the user account permissions.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Nishu

What will that do to my monitors? Will they stil work?

The GPU is a Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070.

It'll disable the secondary monitor. Your primary monitor should work. Try disabling both the GPUs (Nvidia and Intel) one by one. Also, close the applications which utilize GPU. Disabling the GPU might cause those apps to crash or not function properly. You can enable the GPU right from the Device Manager or restart your computer.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Nishu

I'm running four 4K monitors off the GPU. Disabling it sounds like a bad idea.

I loaded in old drivers to the GPU from before the problem occured. Same issue.

It's got to be something with the new AE. Am I the only one with this problem?

All I can say is that mine is working. Did you run the latest updates? (The version number in the Creative Cloud app did not update.)

Just had an update and relaunched the app and now it works, try updating and if that fails try opening a prior/past project and starting a new project from that (when creating the new project Save As "Boot_File" project onto desktop to act as a psuedo boot file for AE)

This workaround WILL help you to launch AE. First, click on a AE-supported file extension to launch the project; I used .aep. The project loads without error. Second, navigate to preferences GENERAL dialog and untick the ENABLE HOME SCREEN. Close the project, close AE, and re-launch AE in customary manner (shortcut to AE). AE launches without error. I do not need the home screen. Your welcome!
