Toggle the Mask and Shape Path Visibility... that seems to fix it.  Buggy.

Thank you, that worked for me. It's ridiculous that these work arounds are so necessary for an "established" app like After Effects.

I know this is 4 years old but throwing my 2 cents in I hate having 7 thousand bounding boxes on my screen so I usually have this off unless I need to see the size of something. Annoying I have to have this on to see the brush! But thanks!

To follow up, I tryed liquify in a new proejct file and it worked fine. The project file with the issue had come from Pr "Replace with after effects comp..". Not sure why the issue happened, but I was able to work around it.
