Without any system we can't tell you much. From general hardware acceleration issues to possibly cache issues to some genuine bugs on some combinations of Macs and OSX this could be anything.

We need the system, AE, and workflow details to help. There is a but with Rotobrush Version 2.0 but you can work around that if you press Caps Lock as soon as you have added the first stroke, change the Version from 2.0 to 1.0 in the Effects Control panel, then release the Caps Lock and proceed with the work. I have given this solution a dozen times recently on a dozen different threads concerning the same problem.

The bug does not apply to all versions of AE or all operating systems.
