I am testing AE 2021 and AE beta on an M1 Mac. The Beta version of AE is universal, the 2021 version is intel. Both are running just fine. Try those versions. The M1 won't run anything earlier.

Same problem. 
I had 2 potential app/plug-in conflicts. Cinema Grade, and Insta360. 
removed them from the plug ins folder, emptied my trash, restarted AE and it opened as it should.
I uninstalled the apps but that did not remove the plug ins inside the adobe folder.
If you're unaware (as I was) of the location of these items:

Go into your Macintosh HD
>Library
>Application Support

>Adobe

>Common

>Plug-Ins
inside the plug ins folder you will find the offending items to remove. 
Now go make cool stuff!
