After Effects error: missing data in file ( 33 :: 4 )

New Here ,
Dec 01, 2025 Dec 01, 2025

I'm getting this error in After Effects and I have no idea what else to try. I've already tried recovering it in every possible way and nothing worked. My PC froze and I had to restart it, but the project was still open, and when I booted back up this error popped up. I can’t afford to lose this project — I’ve put five days of work into it.

"I created it in After Effects 2021 and tried opening it again in After Effects 2020. I even tried launching it in the 2019 version, but nothing worked."

Sorry to hear about the issue.

Opening a 2021 project in an older version won't work unless you save it for the previous version from 2021. If you can, share the project file with me so that I can try opening it on my end, but I can not promise that it'll work. Feel free to share it via DM.

Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for troubleshooting.

Thanks,
Nishu

Thanks for sharing the project file. I shared the file with the product team. Unfortunately, your project file has been corrupted and couldn't be recovered. Were you able to use the project files from the Auto Safe folder?

Thanks,
Nishu
