I recently deleted my preferences folder due to a problem. The problem fixed, but when I tried to re-open preferences I get an error that says, "Sorry, an error occured. Afterfx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Any fixes?
I'm running After Effects 2021 on an HP Pavillion Windows 10 Intel i5 NVIDIA GTX 1650
Hard to tell without actual crash logs. Since upon deleting prefs AE will simply create new ones with factory defaults this should not be happening. Chances are the problem that caused you to delete them in the first place still persists. The usual suspects of course apply: Check your graphics driver, make sure all files and folders are accessible, clean out caches and temp files.
As Mylenium suggested, did you try updating the GPU driver? Did it help? If not, could you try running After Effects as administration (right click After Effects icon > Run as administrator).
